Genealogical Enquiries
The main purpose of this website is to provide information about the life and Christian witness of Rutherglen Old Parish Church. However, since its publication, numerous genealogical enquiries have been received. Unfortunately, it is very difficult for the Old Parish to respond to such enquiries for a variety of reasons, namely:
The Minister's substantial pastoral duties prevent him from having the time to undertake genealogical research
All other officials of the Old Parish are voluntary workers, many of whom are in full-time employment
The church does not possess records of marriages nor of those who are interred in the adjacent graveyard (last used in the early 1950s) nor of funerals conducted by the present or former ministers of the parish.
If the information contained in the following paragraphs does not help with your enquiries, you may wish to contact the Old Parish Church but we do ask your understanding if it takes some time to respond to your enquiry.
It is hoped that the following information may be of some help to those seeking genealogical information:
South Lanarkshire Council (SLC) hold a wide range of sources and materials of local interest in their three main local/family history collections at East Kilbride, Hamilton and Lanark Libraries. However, they do not hold cemetery records from Rutherglen Old Parish Church (and are unaware of the location of these records) nor do they hold birth, marriage or death records from 1855 onwards - these are available from the General Register Office for Scotland (see address below). Further information about SLC's holdings is available on the Project Earl Familia web site at
http://www.earl.org.uk/familia/services/scotland/south_lanarkshire.html
Charges apply to enquiries (successful or not) received from outside the SLC area. Enquiries may be made using an ENQUIRY CHARGES/ORDER FORM which may be obtained at hamilton.reference@southlanarkshire.gov.uk
SLC holds the following census records on Rutherglen in the libraries shown:
1841-61 and 1871 (partial) in Hamilton
1841-1881 in Lanark
